Belle de Jour
When you’re watching a film that has Catherine Deneuve finding liberation through prostitution, you’re not supposed to be thinking about things like the lighting, but as I was going through it my mind kept coming back to Bunuel’s style. In all his films the aesthetic is so traditional, none of the lighting is in the least bit realistic. Hitchcock did the same thing and it’s what helped bring that extra edge to their films. They never telegraphed or cued you that something weird or confusing was going to happen. Instead they lull you into the familiar and then begin to twist things and destroy them from the inside and you’re left with something completely new.
